Laser energy offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional liposuction. Conventional liposuction involves making small incisions and inserting a thin tube called a cannula, to remove fat deposits. It requires that you be put to sleep under general anesthesia and takes a couple of weeks to recover. Laser liposuction, on the other hand, is a technique that utilizes laser energy to break up fat deposits so that the body's natural systems remove them. There is some limited swelling and minor soreness, but most people are able to return to their normal daily duties immediately, or within a day or two. If you're considering laser fat removal, here's what you need to know about three common techniques.

CoolSculpting

A technology developed by Zeltiq, many cosmetic practices offer CoolSculpting. The laser delivers controlled cooling to targeted fat cells beneath the skin. As a result the fat cells essentially freeze to death and your body removes them. The procedure is gentle and the device has a built in safety mechanism that shuts off automatically if it senses that the skin is getting too cold. Once your body begins to flush the fat cells out, you'll begin to see results. You'll notice results in as little as a week. However, it typically takes about three months for final results. CoolSculpting is best if you're close to your target weight, but have some small trouble spots in your hips, thighs, or abdomen. You're able to return to daily duties immediately.

Zerona

Another cooling laser technology, Zerona offers results in a shorter time frame, typically about two weeks. Instead of freezing the fat cells to death, Zerona works by stimulating fat cells in a way that causes their contents to liquefy. The stored fat then leaks out into the cell and the body flushes it out of the system. The procedure consists of six treatments that are administered over a two-week period. On average, you can expect to lose anywhere from three-to-nine inches. The procedure is gentle and painless and you're able to leave your appointments and resume your daily duties immediately.

TruSculpt

Unlike the other two procedures, TruSculpt uses controlled warming to remove unwanted fat. The warming stimulates fat cells to the point of cell death, causing them to shrink so that your body can safely remove the dead fat from your body. Sessions last anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour depending on the size of the area being treated. It requires fewer sessions, with most people seeing a noticeable difference in problem areas with one, or two sessions. It may take up to 12 weeks for you to see the final results.
